The brutal terror attack shocked the whole world. Researchers pointed out, however, that extremist right-wing hatred is shared by many and has a long history at both the national and global level. According to the terrorist, the Labour Party had betrayed the country through its policies on immigration and equality. In his compendium, known to many as a manifesto, he includes extensive conspiratorial rhetoric about Muslims, women, the media, politicians and other public figures placed on the political left. The terrorist believed a form of civil war was under way and that this justified the killings.
Right-wing extremism is gaining ground in Norway. At the same time, extremist language has been normalised. This is evident in the political discourse, in online comments sections and in everyday conversations.
